THREE PROJECTS IN NATURAL AREAS HAVE OFFSET 84 TONNES OF CO2 AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition has recognised, with its “Compenso” seal, our participation in environmental forest management projects, which make it possible to offset the polluting gas emissions generated by our business activity. In 2024, at Shop&Roll we acquired offset credits from three forest plantations, which have served to absorb 84 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the equivalent of 30% of our carbon footprint (Scopes 1 and 2) over the past three years.

These tree replantings act as CO2 sinks, helping to offset the gases that we inevitably produce in our daily activity (electricity consumption at our sites, transport of goods, etc.). Forests contribute to fighting global warming and bring multiple benefits to society as a whole: increased biodiversity, soil protection, water capture, the production of natural resources, improvement of the landscape

OFFSET PROJECTS IN 2024

In 2024 we took part in the natural regeneration of pine forests after the fire that affected the communal woodland of Pasadela, in Rianxo (La Coruña), promoted by the Forest Association of Galicia. We also participated in the reforestation of wastelands with native species in abandoned grazing land in Tórtoles de Esgueva (Burgos), run by the company Crece. And in the planting of Scots pine on land in Hoyocasero (Ávila), on the outskirts of the Gredos mountain range, which after decades of abandonment had been overrun by highly flammable shrubland, promoted by Albiomgener.

For each project, the “Compenso” seal has credited Shop&Roll with 28 credits, equivalent to 28 tonnes of carbon dioxide, accounting for more than 30% of the carbon footprint for Scopes 1 + 2 over the years 2021 (5.46%), 2022 (10.44%) and 2023 (14.58%).

In addition, this initiative has helped to raise awareness among our employees, through a short training session on the basics of the carbon footprint and how to collaborate to reduce it, and a vote on the projects we should take part in.

THE ROAD TO NET-ZERO EMISSIONS

As a key point, we develop these offsetting measures alongside our own emission reduction measures. These are the two pillars supporting Shop&Roll’s corporate goal of achieving net zero, on Scopes 1 and 2, by 2030, thus contributing to reducing the effects of global warming and the UN sustainable development goals.

As a company, we have recorded since 2021 our carbon footprint for Scopes 1 (direct emissions) and 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity), which is why we also hold the “Calculo” seal from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. The reduction in emissions relative to turnover has been steady thanks to measures such as improved energy efficiency, the use of electricity from renewable sources and responsible water use.

Thus, the figures for the 2022-23 period show that the reduction in the gross carbon footprint achieved was 8% at the Madrid site and 2% in Zaragoza. Our goal now is to add this year the “Reduzco” seal, granted after demonstrating a weighted reduction over a minimum of four years.

In addition to continuing actions to reduce the volume of greenhouse gases we emit and to offset our own emissions, at Shop&Roll we have also begun working on the reduction of Scope 3, which covers other indirect emissions from the purchase of raw materials to the recycling of products at the end of their useful life — so we can keep contributing as a company to sustainable development.
